WHAT IS SUSTAINABLE FASHION?
With GREENWASHING rife in the fashion industry, it's time to talk about what sustainability is and how we define it.

What is SUSTAINABILITY?

Having seen a small brand (who shall remain nameless) claim that their clothes were 100% sustainable, it got me thinking about how ambiguously this word is used.

The brand in question had a certified ethical status, which is great. However, there was absolutely no evidence of sustainability. They simply stated ‘100% sustainable’ with nothing to back it up.

What is worrying is that I had discovered the brand through a powerful influencer. She had obviously trusted the source and was shouting about their sustainability; and the 16,000+ followers she had, would have all been GREENWASHED in one single Instagram post.

In my opinion Influencers have a duty of care to do their homework before making such claims in front of thousands of people. Brands and retailers like these, are damaging the cause as they confuse and create mistrust in consumers.

The Definition:

According to the Cambridge Dictionary, SUSTAINABILITY is: the quality of causing little or no damage to the environment and therefore able to continue for a long time.

With this in mind, I’d like to point out that it is not possible at this time to be 100% sustainable. Any brand that claims that it is, either does not understand sustainability or is GREENWASHING you.

So how do we define Sustainable Fashion?

By definition alone, the whole garment and manufacturing process would need to cause little or no damage to the environment. Therefore, the sustainability of each element of a product should be taken into account and outweigh the negative impact on the environment.

For example: A t-shirt made from organic cotton sounds fantastic, but can NOT be classed as sustainable if:

the organic cotton is not certified.

toxic dyes are used,

glitter printing is used. (unless they're using eco glitter)

plastisol inks are used.

it is produced in a factory powered by fossil fuels,

it is packed in plastic,

it is not recyclable or circular.

The most you could say is that this product is using sustainable materials*. The t-shirt itself is not sustainable, as the damage caused to the environment outweighs the ‘organic status’ of the cotton.

* Organic cotton alone is not actually sustainable, in fact no raw material is… but that is a whole other blog post, which I will be writing in the future.

What to look out for:

A brand that is truly sustainable, will always be able to tell you the journey of their product from seed to shop. They will be completely transparent, and it will be well documented on their website. If it isn’t... then ask questions**. If they can’t answer in detail, then they are not to be trusted.

With sustainability being the beating heart of Tors & Co, it is very frustrating that the message is lost, when other brands claim to be something they are not. You can read more HERE about the sustainability of our clothes and how we are changing the face of fashion.

Greenwashing is creating huge mistrust in the industry and I’d love to hear other people’s thoughts on when a product should be classed as sustainable.

Stay safe everyone, its tough for us all at the moment, but please don't forget that the environment still needs our help!

Tx

** I will be doing a future blog on things to ask.
